Issue No. 2 - Executive Summary of Why Can't Everyone Just Get Along?: How BC's family law system puts survivors in danger

March 2021

When family violence is raised, how does the legal system respond? Rise Women’s Legal Centre undertook research between 2017-2020 on exactly this question analyzing responses since the Family Law Act (FLA) came into effect in 2013 in British Columbia. We heard story many stories about a legal system that is not designed to recognize the pervasiveness of family violence, nor to assess and respond meaningfully to the risks of future violence, which is “particularly high following parental separation.” The webinar offers recommendations to make systemic and cultural change to the family law system.
